The Spiral Steppers are a team of disabled performers from the Spiral Blue centre of Windward Day Services, who perform annual shows with a variety of themes to a live audience, all for charitable purposes. From 2014 to 2019, I filmed four of these plays, which launched my career into professional videography.
2014 - MOVIE MASHUP
My first professional freelance project, filmed with minimal assistance using two camera angles despite being advised to use just one. I took the initiative to experiment, which helped develop my editing skills. I also recorded and synced sound separately using a microphone and Audacity. While the video quality isn't perfect, this project laid the foundation for my filmmaking career and features vibrant dance sequences set to iconic film songs.
2015 - AWARDS CEREMONY
Filmed entirely on my own using two camera angles and one microphone, this project builds on my previous approach with the added challenge of no assistance. It includes limited use of dynamic titles and pre-filmed clips shown to the audience, cutting between those and the live performance to enhance clarity. While quality could be better, it showcases further growth in my independent filming and editing. The play itself is themed around awards ceremonies and features vivid dance sequences.
2017 - DISNEY & MUSICALS
Filmed and edited with minimal assistance using the same two camera setup, this version of Spiral Steppers features vibrant dance sequences blending iconic Disney musicals with traditional musical theatre. With greater use of dynamic titles, high-quality footage, and enhanced sound editing, including reverb effects for dance sequences, the production showcases an improved cinematic approach while still capturing the energy of the live performances. My personal favourite of the collection.
2019 - FAIRY TALES
Based on classic fairy tales and once again featuring high-quality footage captured with a two camera setup, fluent editing, and refined audio (all done independently), this version of the show had a stronger focus on costume, performances, and traditional dance sequences. It marked a fitting sendoff, becoming Windward's best-selling DVD, and posed a unique challenge for me due to stronger varieties with on-stage lighting, requiring quick problem-solving to ensure the best visuals.
